For current tenants
Moving out
A smooth move-out helps you get your deposit back quickly. Here's what to do and when.
1. Give written notice
Give written notice according to the terms of your lease and email it to [email protected]. Include your address, unit and the date you plan to move out. We'll reply with move-out instructions and schedule a walkthrough.
2. Allow showings
We may show the home to new renters in your final weeks, always with proper notice. Keeping the home tidy during that time helps.
3. Clean and repair
- Empty and clean the refrigerator, oven, microwave and cabinets.
- Clean bathrooms, floors, windowsills and baseboards.
- Remove all belongings, trash and anything left outside or in storage areas.
- Patch small nail holes only if your lease allows, and ask before painting.
- Replace burned-out bulbs and any HVAC filter you're responsible for.
4. The walkthrough and keys
We compare the home with the dated move-in photos. Normal wear and tear isn't charged to you. Return every key, fob, garage remote and mailbox key.
5. Your security deposit
Under New Jersey law, your deposit plus interest is returned within 30 days after the tenancy ends, with an itemized list of any deductions. Give us your forwarding address in writing so it reaches you. More detail: NJ security deposit rules.
6. Utilities and mail
Schedule utility shut-off or transfer for your move-out date, and set up USPS mail forwarding.
